I have responded to such events likewise, you just need to make sure you get them in the front. There was a case in Washington state where a guy shot a car thief as he was running towards the owner, but it was also the thiefs only direction of egress. Charged with manslaughter, Grand jury, the whole nine yards. He eventually was cleared of criminal charges, but then there are also the civil charges thing and lots of legal fees. A big mess anyway you look at it. It sucks having your car broken into. I feel your pain.
